The concept for the cover of Forever Man, published by Interlude Press, centers around a musician caught in a moment before he goes on stage to perform. The client wanted the cover to be modern and sexy, and also to draw on elements of the setting of the book in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  I chose a distressed, slab-serif font for the cover to evoke a bit of the old west, and created original scratchboard art of a “sacred heart” milagro which ties to a pivotal scene in the story. For the back cover, I reworked the scratchboard art in photoshop to add color and texture.Getting the right look for our musician was a whole other challenge. Due to budget constraints, we opted to see what we could do with stock photography, but could not find a single picture that would serve for what we needed. So, we decided to “make our own” from three separate pictures that each contained something we wanted in our final image. (To see a step by step description of how the composite musician for the cover art came together, check out this link.)
